The Sterkfontein Caves, located in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, are described as the “world’s anthropological treasure house” since it has been the site of some of the most significant discoveries about the evolution of man. Scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils here, dating back more than 4-million years, to the birth of humanity. The Australopithecus africanus fossils were discovered in Sterkfontein.
The Maropeng Visitor Centre, housed in the dramatic Tumulus building, is an information and science hub with a collection of brilliant exhibitions focusing on human evolution over the last few million years.
The building in which the visitor centre is located, resembles an ancient burial mound, known as a tumulus, which blends artfully with the grassland surroundings.
The tour is educational as well as entertaining, with interactive displays and magical underground boat cruises
